To avoid waiting in long lines on collection day, consider dropping off your hazardous materials at an alternate location year-round:

  • Pharmaceuticals and controlled substances - Sheriff’s Office
  • Unused paints and stains - donate to Habitat for Humanity
  • Empty propane tanks (large or small) - recycle at Padnos (and get paid!)
  • Small Appliances (mini-fridges, ac units) - recycle at Padnos

A suggested $10 donation from participants will help to cover materials brought in on collection day and prevent and early closure. Most cars bring in $64-$85 in waste! Every pound costs $0.95 for disposal and donations are greatly appreciated!

The Collection Day was inspired in 2006 by the State of Michigan's Agricultural Clean Sweep program. Clean Sweep was established to keep unwanted or expired pesticides and other chemicals from potentially entering our rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Committee members realized that some of these same chemicals are also being utilized by non-agricultural residents and property owners, so they pursued local funding to get a residential program going, too, for household hazardous waste.

The HHW committee is very grateful for those who have already contributed donations to support the program. These entities include AFFEW, Hamlin Lake Preservation Society, United Way, private donations, and many of the townships, municipalities, and county governments of the 3-county group. Likewise, this event would not be possible without our volunteers. A HUGE THANK YOU to those dedicated volunteers who return annually to help at the event with traffic control, surveys, battery sorting, oil, and cardboard recycling.
