: Midwest, eastern U.S., southeastern U.S., and eastern Canada
Typical Mature Height: 60-70 feet
Light Requirement: sun
Soils: rich soils
Habitat: rich woods, especially near stream banks
Flower Color: green, brown
Fruit: nut enclosed in a green husk
Bloom Time: spring
Wildlife Value: walnuts are eaten by squirrels and other mammals
Uses: nuts are edible and delicious; inner and outer bark was historically used for medicinal purposes; BUTTERNUT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE BUTTERNUT CANKER, AN EXOTIC FUNGUS THAT KILLS THE TREE. Management may be necessary.
