Native Pollinator Mix for Mesic Soils Bulk

“Mesic” is the technical term we use for soils that are “in the middle” in terms of soil moisture. If you have soils that seem to hold a bit of moisture to them, but still gradually drain, this is a good fit. Examples of areas where this mix might be best include along ditches, pond edges or low areas that might briefly have standing water in spring. If your soil has a mix of sand and a bit of “good black dirt”, or organic matter, this is a good mix for you. If your soil has less organic matter or doesn’t really hold moisture, consider our Shortgrass Prairie Mix for Dry soils.

If you are looking for a good mix for wildlife cover, songbird nesting habitat and pollinator habitat, this is a great mix. It’s also a low-maintenance alternative to mowing a lawn! The species are planned so that you have a variety of colors blooming throughout the season. Native species are better adapted to our Michigan climate and soils than some ornamental species, so they require limited watering to get started and practically no watering, fertilizer or mowing needed after they become established. As many of our native grasses are “bunch grasses, the bulk of the plant height will be in the 2-3' range, but flowering stems of grasses and forbs could reach 4-5’ tall at maturity. Please note that not all seed is sourced in Michigan. If you are looking for specific genotype seed, shorter plant species or other custom mixes, please contact our office directly.

This mix will generally contain the following species, but we occasionally need to make alterations based on availability.

Wildflowers:  Swamp Milkweed, New England Aster, Purple Coneflower, Boneset, Common Sneezeweed, Marsh Blazing Star, Wild Bergamot, Narrowleaf Mountainmint, Grey-headed Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Narrowleaf Sunflower, Stiff Goldenrod, Ohio Spiderwort, Blue Vervain, Spotted Joe Pye Weed, Purple-stem Aster, Monkeyflower, Showy Tick-Trefoil, Great St. Johnswort, Golden Alexander

Grasses:  Big Bluestem, Canada Wildrye, Indiangrass
