HWA Survey Season Starting
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) treatment season has wrapped up and detection survey season is beginning again. We provide free surveys of hemlock trees on your property from November 1 - April 30!
This is a great time to begin to keep an eye out for the white, cotton-ball-like HWA ovisacs on your hemlock trees.
This winter, we will be focusing our survey efforts within 5 miles of the lakeshore, with particular emphasis on areas surrounding Hamlin Lake, along the Lincoln River and Jebavy Rd, all areas where HWA was detected last winter (generally west of Jebavy Rd and south of Hamlin lake).
HWA is an invasive bug that kills hemlock trees by feeding on their sap. Currently, the furthest North that HWA has been detected is the southern and eastern edges of upper Hamlin Lake. MLCD is funded by the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program to treat private properties from north to south in an effort to slow the northern spread of HWA.
