About the District
Serving our community
Based in Scottville, Michigan, the Mason-Lake Conservation District has been serving our community for over 80 years. Founded as one of Michigan's earliest soil conservation districts, we now encompass a range of programs that reflect our mission to support sustainable practices, conserve natural resources, and educate the public on environmental stewardship.
We work with local farmers through the MAEAP and Produce Safety programs to implement conservation practices that protect natural resources and support sustainable agriculture. Our team provides guidance, farm visits, and cost-share opportunities to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and achieve certification.
Agriculture
We help protect local ecosystems by managing Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) infestations and assisting landowners in preserving hemlock trees. In partnership with NCCISMA, we offer resources, guidance, and support on controlling invasive species, ensuring the health and sustainability of our natural areas for generations to come.
Invasive Species
We assist landowners in protecting shorelines with natural solutions that reduce erosion, support wildlife, and deter geese. Using native plants and materials like American beachgrass, we improve stability and promote biodiversity. Our team provides technical advice, permitting help, and seasonal beachgrass sales for shoreline restoration.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) works with Conservation Districts to support farmers and landowners. NRCS offers financial aid through EQIP for projects like cover crop rotation and wildlife habitat improvement. CSP rewards long-term conservation efforts, ACEP protects agricultural land and wetlands, and CRP helps improve environmental quality by removing sensitive land from production.
NRCS
Each year, a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event offers the community a safe way to dispose of hazardous materials, including pesticides, electronics, batteries, and more. By ensuring these items are properly disposed of, the event helps protect the environment, preventing harmful chemicals from contaminating soil and water, and supporting safe recycling and disposal practices.
Household Hazardous Waste
The Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) helps landowners in Mason, Lake, and Manistee counties with forest management, wildlife habitat, and forest health. Services include site assessments, advice on timber harvesting, and information on programs like the Qualified Forest Program (QFP) for tax benefits. FAP also offers workshops, training, and assistance in creating sustainable management plans.
